Directory and research methodology

How to interpret gym listings, verification labels, review counts and future original directory studies.

What the directory contains

The application combines stored gym records with an imported directory dataset. Fields can include names, addresses, websites, schedules and review counts. Coverage and completeness vary. Imported records can contain errors, duplicates, stale details or businesses that need further classification.

What verified means

The current data model can mark a record as verified or unverified. It does not, on its own, document who performed the check, when it happened or which fields were confirmed. Treat this flag as a record attribute, not a guarantee of coaching quality, safety, ownership confirmation or current details. Ask the gym to confirm important information.

Review counts and city guides

Review counts are stored values and can become stale. A count is not an independent editorial score. City and best-of pages use directory data and review counts; placement does not prove that a gym is best for a particular reader. These pages are not an exhaustive census of all active U.S. BJJ gyms.

Before publishing original studies

Each original study must document source rights, collection dates, geography, sampling and exclusions, entity checks, missing fields, limitations and conflicts. It must publish downloadable aggregate results when rights permit. Directory coverage alone cannot establish national membership prices, class availability or market share.

Use the contact page to identify a page and field that need checking. Owners can supply current information through the claim-listing form. We may need independent confirmation before changing a record.
